One of the three cornerstone programs of GSK Foundation is Education.

Tuberculosis

TCP (Teacher-Child-Parent) Laban sa TB is a joint project of  GSK Foundation and the Department of Education. It is aimed at educating children to help control the incidence of tuberculosis by providing them with rudimentary information about the human respiratory system, placing special emphasis on the disease. The program is part of an anti-tuberculosis campaign to be implemented in public elementary schools. It raises the learning level of students, as teachers and pupils work together with special teaching guides and workbooks on TB. It also involves parents of the students in the learning activity through take home assignments.
In 2003, TCP TB Modules were included in the Basic Education Curriculum of the Department of Education under the topic of the respiratory system within the Science and Health subject. GSK provided TB Teaching Guides and TB Workbooks to 30,500 Grade V Health and Science teachers nationwide thus benefiting 1.5 million Grade V pupils every year.

PTSI: DOTS LABAN SA TB PROJECT (Family DOTS) This is a TB Treatment – Operational Study Program for smear (+) TB patients under the “Effectiveness of a Family Member as Treatment Partner” of which GSK partners with the Philippine Tuberculosis Society (20 PTSI branches nationwide).  The study catered 1,300 TB patients who cannot report daily for DOTS in health units regularly especially when health unit is far from patient’s residence, no transportation can reach the area and no BHW is servicing the area. 1,221 smear (+) TB patients were admitted in the study of which 1,108 were converted to smear (-) and declared cured. An 86.7% cure rate was obtained prior to the WHO cure rate standard of 85%. The result of the study was presented in the PSMID Convention in December 2003.
Starting April 2007, the Dept. of Health and local health centers will spearhead a follow up 2-year study on the effectiveness of Family DOTS in 6 pilot areas involving 2,000 patients.
